If yes, how long would it take to get from Florence to Venice by train?

Yes, you can (but better you’re prepared to run a sort of marathon…!!)
You should hop on the overnight train (ICN – Marco Polo) from Florence to Venice. This will allow you both to be early in the morning at Venice and also to save the cost of one night in hotel….!!!
The train ticket for this train costs € 21,00 in 2nd class and € 28,50 in 1st class.Seat reservation is mandatory for this train.
That’s the train’s schedule (also for seat reservation and ticketing)

The train leaves from Florence (beware it’s from Firenze CDM -Campo di Marte station – not the main station SMN- S.Maria Novella) at 01:47am and arrives to Venice S.Lucia station at 05:24 am. You’ll be in Venice ready to start at abt.6 am. Don’t worry being too early since the town never sleeps and you can see something that mostly of tourists are not immagining. The narrow chanels and streets are almost empty but you can see the boats delivering the goods, residents that starts they’re working day, the wild ducks stationing in the waters during the day entering the bars that start to open.My suggestion is to walk from the station (you must have a good map otherwise we will loose yr way in Venice..!!) to St.Mark’s square. It’s affordable (I did it) and gives you the opportunity both to have a deeper look to hided spots and spend 1 hour time before bars of the square are open and ready to let you taste a good "cappuccino" !
You can spend the whole day visiting Venice (unless you want see all the things one full day it’s sufficient..!!) and then you can take a train back to Florence.
The easiest one (no train’s changes)is the ES Eurostar that leaves at 6:32 pm and arrive to Florence SMN (main station) at 9:23 pm. Cost of the ticket is € 30 in 2nd and € 44 in 1st. Also for this train seat reservation is mandatory.
Here’s the schedule http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/TimeTable
At the end of the day you’ll be destroyed but to visit Venezia it’s a must.
